Towards intentional aesthetics within topology optimization by applying the principle of unity-in-variety

Abstract Topology optimization is increasingly applied to design consumer products, for which aesthetics plays an important role acceptance. In industrial design, it known that preferences or taste judgement obey certain rules principles. These principles are not directly quantifiable, but can qualitatively predict and explain aesthetic responses. this paper, we empirically evaluate whether these effective increasing the appealingness of topology optimized shapes. Our starting point overarching principle as Unity-in-Variety . Variety stimulates our interests, whilst unity helps us make sense a in its entirety. According principle, appreciation maximized when balance variety attained. Since designs from often exhibit remarkable complexity variety, hypothesize key reach thus elevate optimization. experimental setup, were manually post-processed, with intention increase unity, by following “principles perceptual grouping”, Gestalt user study shows 11 out 12 pairs their modified counterparts, perceived majority visually more appealing, confirming hypothesis. findings provide good basis improving pleasure designs, either ultimately integrating them formulation.
